Much of modern Langkawi is tied to the legend of Mahsuri, the beautiful maiden who lived on the island about 200 years ago. She was falsely charged with adultery and upon her execution she bled white blood, a sign of innocence, and cursed the island for seven generations. The Siamese invaded soon after and Langkawi wilted. Indeed it was only in the 1980s after seven generations that the islands prospered again as it does today. This multi-faceted cultural centre revolves around Mahsuri’s tomb site, with traditional Malay houses, a museum complex telling the story and much more.
